COLFIORITO REGIONAL PARK

COLFIORITO REGIONAL PARK

One day to explore natural Umbria and Colfiorito Regional Park, a World Heritage Site.

Driving from Foligno to Civitanova Marche, you reach the Casone Palteau, characterized by cultivated fields (lentils, spelt, red potatoes) and a vaste marsh where live several birds, insects, plants, flowers and bushes.

In the middle of this valley in 1269 was built the small village of Colfiorit: it sets in a strategic position in this mountain area, along the ancient Via Plestina and the newer Via Lauretana, between Umbria and Le Marche.

Arriving in the village, on the left side of the road, you find some modern long buildings called "Le Casermette", used in the past as a military base and where now there are some shops, small restaurants and the Tourist Information Office of the park ( tel./fax +39.0742.681011 - www.parks.it/parco.colfiorito  parcocolfiorito@tiscali.it).

You begin your visit to the "Museo Naturalistico del Parco di Colfiorito" to know the marsh and the history and the evolution of the Altopiani Plestini.

To visit Colfiorito Regional Park you can walk or bike and choose between 2 tracks.

"Itinerario della Palude" is a simple track, a pleasant walking of  moreless mts. 800 long, that arrives  directly to the marsh from the Tourist Office.

"Itinerario del Castelliere" is a more difficult track that goes up to the top of Monte Orve (924 mts. a.s.l.) and from where you enjoy a spectacular view on  the valley and on the marsh of Colfiorito.

Experts guides are available to organize your excursions and to inform you about the history of the area and the botanical, vegetation and faunal characteristics of this park.

Not to be missed a visit to the Museo Archeologico di Colfiorito (tel.+39.0742.681198 - archeo.colfiorito@libero.it): there is an interesting collection of 1.450 archeological finds to show the Plestini civilization who lived here.

At the end of your day in Colfiorito you absolutely must savour the delights of local food: a soup with lentils, a spelt salade, home-made gnocchi prepared with red potatoes, bread and ham, local pecorino cheese.

A souvenir with local products from Colfiorito will be appreciated by friends and relatives!!
