EXPLORING GUBBIO

EXPLORING GUBBIO

Arriving in Gubbio you enjoy a wonderful view on the oldest part of the town, at the slope of Monte Ingino and dominant a large valley.  Here, surrounded by cultivated fields the superb Roman Amphitheatre is at a walking distance from the town centre.

In Piazza Quaranta Martiri there are the Logge dei Tiratori: this name comes from the past when cloth-merchants

used this place.

Walking in Via della Repubblica, on the left side, there is Tourist Office (www.comune.gubbio.pg.it) where you can buy the Turisticard: the use of Audioguide (with it you can do the tour of the town) and some discounts on Museums tickets, shops, restaurants and other services in Gubbio are included in this card.

It is very pleasant to walk in the town, following your guide and discovering small halleys, romantic corners, old monuments, beautiful churches and wonderful squares.  It is exciting to reach Piazza Grande and admire the medieval Palazzo dei Consoli and the gorgeous panorama on the roofs of the town.

Each 15 May there is a very special event in Gubbio: The Corsa dei Ceri (www.ceri.it). All people living in Gubbio and a lot of tourists are involved in this traditional race of 3 big woodden devices (moreless 200 kilos each),  from Piazza Grande to Basilica di Sant´Ubaldo (patron saint of the town) on the top of Monte Ingino .

Absolutely don´t miss to take the "Patente da Matto"(Crazy driving licence) at the "Fontana del Bargello": you run 3 times around the fountain and then a person living in Gubbio must to make you wet with the fountain´s water.

Local souvenir shops around the fountain sell the parchment  with your name on it.

For lazy persons there is a nice small coloured train "Gubbio Espress" wheelchair accessible, ideal to visit Gubbio.

It is an unforgettable tour of 45 minutes (you can also go up and down in all the stops) to discover the beauty of this enchanting medieval town.
